Suggested Grocery List for Emergencies

Adult Renal Diabetic Diet

This list provides a 6-day supply of canned foods and water. Use fresh foods as long as they are available.

Bread/Cereal

__ 1 loaf regular bread* (not salt free with NO preservatives)

__ 1 box vanilla wafers or graham crackers or unsalted crackers

__ 6 boxes of single serve cereal (no raisin bran)

Fruit

__ 12- 4 oz. cans of fruit or “fruit bowls” (pears, peaches, mixed fruit, applesauce, or pineapple. No raisins).

Fish/Meat

__ 6- 3 oz. or 4 oz. cans of low sodium fish or poultry (tuna, crab, chicken, salmon or turkey)

Vegetables

__ 6- 8 oz. cans of low sodium vegetables (carrots, green beans, peas, corn, wax beans, or asparagus)

Shelf Stable Non-Dairy Creamer

__ 3 packages of dry milk or 4- 8 oz. cans of evaporated milk

Fats

__ 3 small jars of mayonnaise (or 8-12 single serve foil wrapped packs) perishable after opening*

__ margarine

__ oil (olive or vegetable)

High Caloric Foods

__ 1 small jar of honey or jelly (1 tablespoon = 1 serving)

__ small box white sugar (or box of sugar packets) 4 teaspoons = 1 serving

__ 2 packages powdered fruit flavored drink mix or 1 container fruit flavored drink (pre-mixed) ½ cup, mixed

__ 6-pack of 4 oz. cans/boxes of fruit juice (cranberry, apple, or grape only) ½ cup

__ 1-2 cans/bottles of soft drink (non-cola)

Other Beverages

__ 1-2 gallons distilled/bottled water (limit to ½ cup/day in addition to meal plan)

Other (seasoning and fluid control aids)

__ 1 jumbo pack of sugarless chewing gum

__ breath spray

__ herbal seasoning or garlic powder

__ fresh or reconstituted lemon juice
